The easiest Lyon transport ticket is the one that matches your actual route, not the one a previous visitor used. TCL combines metro, tram, bus and funicular journeys, but the enlarged network has six fare zones. A central-city ticket is not automatically enough for an outlying destination. Start with your stops and zones, then choose how to pay.

A practical way to visit
- Look up the full route and its zones on TCL, including the final stop and any disruption.
- Choose a product that covers all zones crossed; check separate rules for special services.
- Validate using the correct reader and keep the same ticket, card or payment device available for inspection.
What makes this stop worthwhile
Contactless bank-card travel is available mainly on most lines in zones 1 and 2, not throughout every outer zone. Red readers are used for bank-card payment; rechargeable transport tickets, cards and the E-ticket application use the appropriate grey validators. Paying with a physical bank card and paying with a phone linked to that account are not interchangeable proofs of payment: keep the same card or device throughout. TCL’s Android E-ticket app is also different from using Apple Pay or Google Pay as a bank-card payment method.
Small decisions that improve the day
- Follow current TCL validation and transfer instructions for your chosen product.
- Check lift status separately when step-free travel matters.
- Do not assume that airport or river services are included in an ordinary central ticket.

Check the zones your journey crosses
Write down the complete trip, including any outer-area destination, before choosing a ticket. The network has zones 1 to 5 and an external zone; the important question is which zones the journey crosses, not simply whether both stops sound like Lyon. A central museum day and a trip beyond the central area may need different coverage. Check each direction if the return route differs, rather than assuming a ticket suitable for the outward trip settles every later journey.
Choose a payment method only after that check. Contactless bank-card payment is mainly available on most lines in zones 1 and 2; it is not a network-wide substitute for every ticket. Red readers take this bank-card payment. Grey validators are used for the relevant transport tickets, cards and E-ticket product. The Android E-ticket app is a transport-ticket system, whereas a bank card in a phone wallet is a payment device.
Keep the proof of travel consistent
- Use the same physical card or the same device for the journey and inspection. A phone and the plastic card linked to the same account are not interchangeable proofs.
- Before travelling as a group, read the current rules for your chosen product. Do not pass one card around on the assumption that it automatically covers everyone.
- If a lift is essential, check its current status and the station exit you need before choosing an interchange.
Can I change from my phone to my plastic card?
Keep the original payment medium available instead. Inspectors need the card or device used to validate, not merely another card connected to that bank account.
Does an ordinary TCL ticket cover Rhônexpress?
No. Rhônexpress has separate fare conditions. Check the airport transfer and any onward TCL journey as distinct parts of the trip.
